You can perform simple to complex queries to find the images you need.
Perform a Search
Go to the main menu and select Search. You will be presented with different search options depending on the collection you are viewing. These options will include keyword, data fields, show all, plus other “quick search” options, which will be unique to the particular collection.
Once you have decided what type of search you will perform from the options available to you, you will be prompted to enter your search criteria.
Here are a few examples of searches:
Keyword searches
Keyword searches allow you to find any characters or groups of characters that are contained in the collections data. These can include, but are not limited to names, places, numbers or any other data information that you may want to perform a search on. To get to the keyword search you will first click the Search option in the main menu, and then click by keywords. For example, if you enter the word "green" in the text field and click Submit.
Insight will search for any instance where green appears in the data, regardless of where it appears in the data fields. The resulting images will appear in the Group Workspace.
If there is no reference to the word green in the current collection, then the Group Workspace will be blank, and the words No images found for that search criteria will appear at the bottom of the window.
You may also search for more than one word or phrase in keyword searches. If you would like to search for the words marble, wood, and sculpture (separate each word by spaces), and all of these words appear in the data of a particular image or images, then those images will appear in the Group Workspace, once you perform the search.
Keyword searches also allow you to perform wildcard matches. Wildcard matches can be performed by using an * at the end of a word, or a ? in place of a letter.
Using an *
Placing an * after the word you are searching for will result in Insight finding anything that begins with those letters. For example, to search for: cat*. Your results could include cat, Catherine, catalog or any other word that contains the letters c a t in that order.
Using a ?
Placing a ? in place of any letter(s), Insight will perform a wildcard search to find any data that fills the ? with a correct letter. Lets say you would like to perform a wildcard match using ? for the letter a (a?). Insight will find all the words that have the letter a and then another letter to follow. These could include at, an, and, as. You can also search for multiple letters at once (for example, bo? search may result in boat, bond, bowl, and book.).
The ? can be placed anywhere a word is used to replace a letter. This function is useful especially if you are searching for words with different spellings or foreign words used in the data.
Data Field searches
Data field searches allow you to search specific search criteria in specific data fields. From the search option in the main menu, click by Data Fields. The data fields available for the collection or collections you are searching will display. The data fields will vary per collection.
Once you select a field to search on, you will be given six unique relations with which you can build your query. These relations are equals, does not equal, contains, does not contain, begins with, and ends with. These six relations are only for text searches. But, if you are searching in fields which only contains numeric fields such as measurements, the relations you will find in Insight are equals, does not equal, is greater than, and is less than.
Relations for searching text:

Equals - Finds images with only exact matches to the value entered in that field.
When you select equals, Insight will bring up an Enter speed search option, a show all option or a list all option.
If you know an exact value that you are searching for, (a particular artist for example under the data field artist, or a particular location under the data field location) then you may type in the information in the Enter speed search and then select List. The information will appear below in a drop down list of values. Select the desired value from the list box. Additional criteria for searching can be gained by using And or Or to narrow the search.. Click Search to begin your query. The images attached to your query will appear in the Group Window.
Contains -Searches a particular data field that includes some part of the information entered, or a complete word or phrase. This is useful if you know a little about what you are searching for in the data field, but do not have the exact information.
For example, you would like to search a data field called artists last name that contains the letters "an". You would select contains after you have chosen the data field that you would like to search. In this example, you would type in the letters an in the line labeled value. You will now have the options to click on Search or Clear Search. If you click on Search, Insight will bring up all the images in the Group Workspace where the artists last name contains "an" somewhere in the name. The results of the search may include lasts names such as Alexander, Manet or Allan. These names all include the letters ,"an."
Does Not Contain -Enables you to specify values to exclude from a results set.
For example, you would like to search a data field called medium description, for all images that do not contain the word paint in the data. You would select does not contain after you have chosen the data field that you would like to search. In this example, you would type the word paint in the line labeled value. You will now have the options to click on Search or Clear Search. If you click on search, Insight will bring up all the images where the medium description does not contain the word paint. These images will be in the Group Workspace.
BeginsWith - Allows you to find records that begin with a value that you specify. This is useful if you would like to find data in a particular data field that begins with a certain letter, number, word or groups of words.
For example, you would like to search a data field called title, for all image titles that begin with the value "the b." You would select begins with after you have chosen the data field that you would like to search. In this example, you would type "the b" in the line labeled value. You will now have the option to click on Search or Clear Search. If you click on Search, Insight will bring up all the images where the title begins with "the b." These images will be in the Group Workspace. Some results of the search may include titles such as The Blue Sky, The Big City or The Bog. These titles all begin with "the b."
Ends With - Enables you to find records that end with a value that you specify. This is useful if you would like to find data in a particular field that ends with a certain letter, number, word or groups of words.
For example, you would like to search a data field called artist, for all images whose artists name end in "son." You would select ends with after you have chosen the data field that you would like to search. In this example, you would type "son" in the line labeled value. You will now have the option to click on Search or Clear Search. If you click on Search, Insight will bring up all the images where the name of the artist ends with "son." These images will be in the Group Workspace. Some results of the search may include artist such as Williamson, Jason and Jackson. These artists last name all end in "son."
